Why vampires would have a population problem

See the rest on the blog.

Michael Marshall, reporter

Maths blog Punk Rock Operations Research points out a major problem with the notion of vampires, which believers in our bloodsucking cousins would do well to note.

Assuming vampires are effectively immortal, and that they can reproduce by turning normal humans into vampires, their population would explode. So in the imagined worlds in which they exist, what prevents them from over-running the planet?

Colleagues in the New Scientist office suggest that there must be a high death rate caused by Slayers and other natural hazards, balancing out the high "birth" rate or mortals converted by bites. Such a mechanism could be modelled using the classic Lotka-Volterra equations for predator-prey populations. Although, of course, vampires are capable of making prey out of their supposed predators.

Keanu Reeves as Spike

Keanu Reeves to plays Spike in Bebop? The overused and stereotype of sci-fi movies is too old for that role. The second one, his eyes doesn't match Spike's eyes. Spike's eyes has a witty look, not as cool as Keanu. Is Holywood running out of young and witty actors lately? There are pletty of young actors who fit more to Spike's character.

Trinity Blood Book 9

I finally read the Indonesian version of Trinity Blood vol 9. Abel is not so nice there. In most of the story he appears with his crusnik form. He is so fierce with his crusnik form :-(. But, there is a nice part, so touchy that made me cry, the part when Seth hug him after so long time she didn't meet her beloved brother.

Hotaru's Wooden Clog

One thing that catch my attention from Samurai Deeper Kyo is Hotaru's geta (wooden clogs) called Ippon-ba-geta (one-support geta). Hotaru, another sexy guy from SDK, was sent to spy on Kyo. He was actually a member of the five stars of the Mibu. His geta is different from other's geta because it needs extra effort to keep the balance (look at the picture). Imagine with this one-support geta Hotaru has to fight Kyo and others. It shows how good his balance is. Also, it's still produced in Japan nowadays.

Sanzo's Quote (1)

Here's some quotes from Sanzo the grumpy monk. He doesn't talk much, most of the time likes using his gun as a conversation tool (like this quote below):

Genjo Sanzo: Damnit! Monkey, go buy me a pack of Cigarettes.

Sha Gojyo: Stupid monkey, get your own food.
Goku: Leave me alone, you pervy water sprit!
Genjo Sanzo: [pulls out gun and start shoting] Will you both shut the hell up?

Genjo Sanzo: Embrace nothing. If you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha. If you meet your father, kill your father. Only live your life as it is, not bound to anything.
Sha Gojyo: [cracks open a beer and takes a swig] Goddamn it, this one's hot. Goku, get me another beer.
Goku: Get your own beer, jerkoff!
Sha Gojyo: Okay, you're gonna get me another beer or I'm gonna take this can and shove it up your whiney little ass! You got that?
Goku: You just try and see what happens, ya shithead!
Sha Gojyo: Oh, yeah?
Goku: You're just looking for an excuse to touch my ass, aren't you?
Genjo Sanzo: [sighs] Please ...

Sha Gojyo: You little fag! Don't project your fantasies on me!
Goku: All right, that's it! Pull over, I'm taking him out!
Genjo Sanzo: Your little unrequited love affair is starting to get on my nerves! Get a room!
[Gojyo and Goku fall silent]

Finally, 3 Columns Layout!

Finally I have managed to re-do the layout of this blog. I have been so bored with the last layout, really really bored. It has been like that since I create this blog account 3 years ago, 2 columns with changing headers... There's nothing new about the design, it's still the same template with some layout variations. But, the layout is great because now I have 3 columns! Now, with these columns I can manage the contents better. I still not finished yet with the arrangement but in the meantime this is just enough I think

Does Vampire Exist?

I have read many books and manga about vampire, vampire story seems nice. But, does vampire (human vampire) really exist? I don't think so. I don't believe such things exist in this world. Here's the quote from skepdic.com:

This cultural link between vampirism and the quest for immortality seems to have been subordinated in literature and film, where other themes, such as blood for blood's sake, fear for fear's sake, or entrance into the realm of the occult, seem to dominate. One sign of the cultural deterioration of our ancestor's noble quest for immortality can be seen in the modern secondary meaning of 'vampire': a woman who exploits and ruins her lover. Another example of deterioration can be seen in the numerous WWW sites on vampires which appeal to occult or New Age interests such as entering the so-called dark side of reality, gaining power, establishing a unique identity as a special person or selling commercial products and games.

Apparently, role playing and masquerading as vampires is not enough to satisfy the bloodlust of some people, and covens or cults of "vampires" have emerged among some occultists. They seek blood to give them power, a sexual rush, or to establish a unique and special fictional persona based on creating fear and mystery in others. Unlike our ancient ancestors, their power is not sought because of fear based on ignorance and misunderstanding of nature, but on ignorance and misunderstanding of themselves. Like other occult cults these vampire covens are attractive to the young and the weak.* Just a few years ago, such "vampyres" would have been considered ill or evil. Today, they are said to have an "alternative lifestyle."

Introducing Snap Shots from Snap.com

I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more.

Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you "look ahead," before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.

Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.

The Children of The Night (part 10)

~+--- VI. The Birth of a Star ---+~

Recent times, far away from the Vatican City, in a small city called Istvar, Hungary, someone stood alone in a room in his castle. He was handsome with his wavy brown hair flowing on his head. He looked strong but a glimpse of sadness lingered from his face. He stood in front of a picture of a beautiful lady, looked sadly to the picture until the butler came in.
“Your guest has arrived sire.”
“Bring him in.”
A young man with a wavy dark long hair appeared in the room.
“You have arrived to my place eventually. Have a seat.”
“Thank you sir.” He sat on a chair.
“I hope you have a pleasant journey.”
“Yes I did sir.”
The host took a glass of water and put something in the water. The clear water turned into a dark red color. Its color was like a blood's. He gave the glass the young man.
“Have a drink. Make yourself at home.” The young man looked at the glass,
“What is this?”
“This is a new substance to replace our traditional drink. Drink it. It has a nice taste.” The young man started to drink. It did taste delicious.
“So, you came directly from the Vatican city.”
“Yes sir.”
“I believe you had seen Vatican’s secret weapon during your last mission.”
The young man was silent for a moment.
“No sir, I don’t.”
The host was starring at the picture said nothing. He was thinking hard. He sighed and continued asking the young Metuselah,
“I heard you have a Terran wife.”
The young man was tensed for a while and replied boldly,
“Yes I do.”
“How is she?”
“She is fine sir.”
He still starred at the picture and whispered,
“Maria…”
“Excuse me sir? I can’t hear you.”
“Did you see any Vatican's secret weapon or installation in you last mission?” He paused,
“There were rumors that Vatican had kept an evil monster. Have you encountered such a being or creature we don’t know?
“No sir.”
“Okay.”

The young man left the castle. The Marquis watched until he disappeared in the darkness. Someone appeared from his back. He said to The Marquis,
“You let him go. Why?”
“He is just like me when I was young. I want him to have a better chance.” He paused and continued,
“The news about the weapon was a rumor. I have just confirmed it my self. There is no need to worry now. The Star of Sorrow will continue definitely. It will be untouchable.”

The Children of The Night (part 9)

~+— VI. The Light of the Dawn —+~

That night, two darks wings had spread widely in front of me. I spread wide and wiped away everything around me. A pair of red eyes starring at me, looked at me sharply and started approaching. Then I woke up in a strange place. The place was huge and so bright. I saw the golden bright light coming down from its wide and tall windows. It was a morning. I had a nightmare. The dark winged shadow still overwhelmed my thoughts. That image caught my mind as I opened my eyes. A blurred shadow of two black wings flashed vaguely still. It was a dream, or a reality? What is that thing I saw yesterday? What was really happening yesterday? I couldn’t think clearly. My head still felt heavy. Maybe I had a nightmare. I couldn’t remember anything clearly. I turned around and saw someone sat beside me.The person had fallen in a deep sleep because I could hear the rhythm of his snore. I gasped. It was Abel! He was sleeping peacefully with one of his hands on my shoulder. I touched his hand gently. He woke up suddenly,
“Ah, you finally wake up!” He said happily.
“What happened? Is that you Abel?” Was Abel the winged creature that night? Is that really him? Or I mistakenly saw him for something else? My head suddenly got dizzy. What about Ioan?
“Where are we? Where is Ioan?”
“Don’t worry too much. You still need rest.”
“Is he okay? Where is he now?”
He just smiled.
Abel had visited me every day. He was really caring for me. He looked more serious than before in these moments. A kind of deed from him I had never seen before. During my rest, I hadn’t got any news from Ioan. rAbel only said he still looking for Ioan. I cried sometimes when thinking about him. I wonder where he was now.

After leaving the hospital, I was ordered to go back to Vatican again. I went to Vatican with Abel. On the train, his face became serious. He brought me a cup of a mint tea and holds my hand. He looked at me and began to say,
“Karin, can I ask you a personal question?”
“Sure. What is that?”
“Do you really love this person, Ioan?”
I didn’t say anything. I nodded and couldn’t stand it anymore; I was burst into tears. Abel put his hand in his pocket, trying to take something out of it. He didn’t success, a lot of things popped out from his pocket, needles, candy, coins, toothbrush and anything else…
“Oh my, where is it? Ah… finally!”
He gave something, an ugly wrinkled handkerchief.
“Wipe away your tears. Mind the wrinkle, it’s still clean, I haven’t used it.” He grinned sweetly,
Abel caressed my hair softly.
“I miss him so Abel…”
I cried on his shoulder heavily.
“We’ll talk about this later. Okay?” He caressed my hair softly.
I sobbed and fell asleep on his shoulder.
